[Seminar Series] International Obligations on Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS): What Collections and Researchers Need to Know

Have you heard of the Nagoya Protocol but are unsure where to start? If you use biological materials from outside Germany, you may have legal compliance obligations. This session provides an introductory overview of the Nagoya Protocol and the international framework on access and benefit-sharing (ABS).
Benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources must be shared in a fair and equitable manner and the Nagoya Protocol ensures that benefits derived from nature are returned to countries rich in biodiversity. As a researcher using genetic resources in the European Union, you may have compliance obligations under ABS rules, the Nagoya Protocol, and EU law—even if your research is basic or non-commercial. Understanding these requirements is essential, but it can be daunting. We’re here to help!
In this webinar, the German Nagoya Protocol HuB project will provide, in an interactive format, an overview of what researchers and collections need to do, how compliance checks work and how to be prepared. In addition, the Museum Koenig Bonn and the Senckenberg Museum will share their practical experience with ABS.
Speaker: Melania Muñoz García (Leibniz Institute DSMZ), Monique Hölting (Museum Koenig Bonn), Dr. Martin Wiemers (Senckenberg Society for Nature Research)
