[Online Training] Data Visualisation for Public Engagement

October 9 @ 10:00 - 13:00

Curious about taking your research beyond the page and turning it into compelling visual stories? Join our hands-on online training and learn to create visuals that spark public interest and encourage meaningful engagement.

Our expert Catalina Hildebrandt, a visual communicator at Berliner Zeitung, has collaborated with organisations such as WWF, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Her work blends graphic design, journalism, and data storytelling to turn complexity into clarity, helping audiences better understand pressing environmental, social, and scientific issues.

What you’ll learn:
  • Storytelling through visuals: bridge the gap between complex data and public understanding.
  • Smart design choices: choose charts, colours and layouts for clarity and accessibility.
  • Tools in action: create interactive visuals using platforms such as Datawrapper and Flourish.
  • Focus on your audience: tailor visual narratives for policymakers, the media, or the public to enhance engagement.
Who should join?

Researchers (especially in the natural sciences), data communicators, museum professionals, citizen scientists — and anyone eager to bring data to life beyond academia. Expect a supportive, hands-on format with real-world scenarios, peer exchange and expert feedback.

Please note: Participation is limited to 25 places. Early registration is essential to secure your spot. To take part, you will need a free Flourish account — sign up in advance here: https://flourish.studio.

Accessibility and Support

We are committed to making this program accessible to everyone.

  • Our trainings take place on Zoom, and we will introduce accessibility features such as captions at the beginning.
  • The trainings use interactive methods, including breakout rooms. Throughout the sessions, you have the option of using a quiet space instead of joining a breakout room.
  • We are using Miro as an interactive tool in the workshops. There will be a short introduction, but we can offer additional support if needed.

If you have specific needs or concerns, feel free to contact Katja Loginova, our Public Engagement Coordinator at katja.loginova@mfn.berlin

We’ll keep you updated with new sessions and information throughout the year.

All trainings are held in English.
